Clavo Huasca (Tynanthus panurensis)
Clavo huasca (Tynnanthus panurensis) means clove vine, and refers to the strong clove-like scent of the trunk and leaves. It is a large woody vine indigenous to the Amazon rainforest and other parts of tropical South America. In Peru, Clavo huasca is traditionally prepared by macerating the vine bark and wood in alcohol or most commonly, the local sugar cane rum called aguardiente.
Clavo huasca is known to give relief when suffering from rheumatism and it works as a sexual stimulant. It is used effectively to relieve toothache as well.
In Peruvian herbal medicine, Clavo huasca is widely respected as an aphrodisiac for both men and women. Amazon indigenous peoples in both Peru and Brazil highly regard clavo huasca as an impotence remedy. Nowadays it is a cornerstone of the two most popular aphrodisiacs/potency formulas in South America.
Clavo huasca is also used as a digestive aid, for fevers - for rheumatism and arthritis and as a muscle relaxant and tonic (it tones, balances, strengthens overall body functions).
It is also known as an adjunctive ingredient in various ayahuasca recipes (or taken shortly after taking the concoction) to settle the stomach. While clavo huasca itself is not a hallucinogen, the ayahuasca brew can be quite purgative - causing vomiting and diarrhoea. Clavo Huasca - Usage
When using Clavo huasca for it’s aphrodisiac qualities it is best to prepare the herb as an alcohol tincture (the traditional method). This is an alcohol and water extract which is used when plants have chemicals that are not easy soluble in water.
In the Amazon, a sugar-cane alcohol resembling rum, called 'aguardiente', is often used to prepare plant tinctures and it is 40% to 50% alcohol. To prepare a tincture with a shelf-life of at least one year this proof is really necessary. It does not really matter what type of alcohol you use.
The best way to make a tincture is to use distilled water. Use also a clean glass bottle (dark coloured or plan to store it in dark place out of the sunlight) with tight fitting lid. Because we offer cut herb, you should use 50 grams of Clavo huasca for every 200 ml of liquid (1 cup).
To prepare approximately 1 cup (200 ml) of tincture (some of the liquid will be absorbed by the dry plant material) place 50 grams of Clavo huasca (cut up or powdered) into your clean glass container. Pour ½ cup (100 ml) of distilled water and ½ cup (100 ml) of 90 proof alcohol into the container (or just use 1 cup of straight 40 proof vodka and no water). Seal the container and store at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Extract the liquid for at least two weeks.Shake the bottle daily. Pour the tincture off the top through a piece of cheesecloth to filter it. Use 3-4 ml of this extract twice a day.
Clavo huasca is also used as an adjunctive ingredient in various ayahuasca recipes (or taken shortly after taking the concoction) to settle the stomach. Don't use the tincture when you are trying to settle your stomach. In this situation use Clavo huasca as an infusion. Take 1-2 teaspoons of the cut Clavo huasca and mix it with a cup of (hot) water. Let the cut herb settle to the bottom of the cup, then drink the mixed liquid from the top (leave the sediment in the bottom).
Due to lack of scientific research, as a precaution, do not take during pregnancy or breast feeding. Clavo huasca contains eugenol which is an irritant to eyes, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system and skin. Eugenol is a sensitizer by inhalation and skin contact.
