Pastor arrested for growing marijuana in his church

The pastor of a parish in Rhode Island (USA) was arrested last month for growing a total of 183 marijuana plants in his church.

The pastor in question was a participant in a medical marijuana program designed to treat registered patients by legally selling cannabis. The plants were used as pain relief, pastor Johansson told the police.

The Rhode Island law states that even with his license to participate in the medical program, the pastor was not allowed to grow more than 24 plants. The pastor was arrested, all growing materials were confiscated and all plants destroyed.

The pastor faces a sentence of up to forty years if convicted, though feels confident of his chances in court, citing his goal of helping those within his community get rid of pharmaceuticals. "This is a plant -- God's gift," Johansson said.
