Sex and weed. Weed and sex. A lot is said about it. A good combination? Or not? Many stoners vouch for it: sex is better when you are high or stoned. And what about libido? Does weed influence that too?
Obvious questions, we think. Because yes, weed is a mind-altering agent. It’s therefore beyond dispute that your perception or experience of sex can be different when you are stoned. But what do we know for sure about sex and weed?
Thanks to science, we have answers to these kinds of questions. Because there are several studies on weed and sex. Do you want to know more about it? Then make yourself comfortable and read this blog post.
Pot smokers have more sex
Yes! This is evident from a large-scale American study from 2017. In total, some 28,000 women and 23,000 men were examined. The researchers looked at both the amount of sex they had and the amount (and frequency) of marijuana that was used.
The conclusions are clear. In both women and men, cannabis users had a head start in terms of sex with non-users: around 20%. In addition, the research showed that the more marijuana someone used, the more sex this person had.
The research therefore shows a connection between weed and sex. But unfortunately, the exact cause and effect behind this connection can’t be drawn from this research. No causal relationship has thus been demonstrated.
Increased libido after weed
According to a number of studies, cannabis users are more interested in sex after smoking weed. Admittedly, those studies took place in the 1980s, but results are results. For example, about half of the men and women reported feelings of lust after weed. Moreover, it was shown that 2 / 3rd of the 'guinea pigs' had more pleasure in sex. Interesting is that later studies had the same results. In a series of interviews from 2003 and 2008, half of the people described cannabis as aphrodisiac.
You don’t have to be a scientist to make the possible connection with the aforementioned large-scale research from 2017, which showed that weed smokers have more sex. No, it is not officially proven. But it is highly probable that an increased libido leads to an increase in sex, right?
Weed not good for sperm and pregnancy
Unfortunately, it’s not all good news. According to this article, smoking cannabis can affect the man's sperm. Smoking weed can not only reduce the amount of sperm, but also reduce the ability to fertilize an egg. However, this effect only appears with heavy use.
But that’s not all. According to the same article cannabis can also have a negative effect on pregnancy, because THC can affect the unborn child. Children who were exposed to cannabis before birth seem to be more hyperactive, unconcentrated and impulsive. According to the quoted professor the difference with other children is subtle though, and not too big a problem. However, it is something to watch out for.
