When exploring illicit or psychedelic substances, there’s always the unavoidable question of safety. Do I really know what this substance will do to me? Am I in the right state of mind for this? What if I react badly to it? Whether it’s your first time flying or you’re set on playing it safe, look no further than good
An independent research company, called the Global Drug Survey (GDS), conducts annual data collections that explore the habits and trends behind drug-use. This year, their study included over 110,000 anonymous participants spread over 50 countries. It found that out of almost 10,000 people who consumed psilocybin hallucinogenic mushrooms in 2016, only 17 people (0.2%) reported needing emergency medical treatment.
Mushrooms safety compared to other drugs
Marijuana itself, by comparison, sent 0.6% of the users to the emergency room. These rates get higher when we consider synthetic substances into the mix: 1% for those taking LSD, another 1% for cocaine, and 4.8% for methamphetamine. A reason for this could be that magic mushrooms give you short-term tolerance. This means that taking more won’t necessarily give you a better trip.
Why are shrooms safe?
With drugs such as heroin or cocaine, a visit to the emergency room can mean a life-or-death situation. With magic mushrooms, a high-dose is more likely to spark paranoia than boosting your high. Founder of the GDS, Adam Winstock, told The Guardian that although ‘safe’, magic mushrooms can still be risky and cause panic attacks or confusion to those who don’t prepare themselves.Winstock explains:
He further states that the bigger risk is when people picked or ate the wrong mushrooms. Which means that preparing oneself can really mean the difference between having an amazing experience and a bad trip. As the study suggests, psychedelic users are among the most responsible drug users as they took the most precautions. So get a trip sitter, put yourself in a pleasing and familiar environment and let the trip begin.
