Product information

The Clitoria ternatea plant is native to tropical areas of Asia and named rather bluntly after the clitoris, because the deep blue flowers resemble the shape. The most common English name is butterfly pea.

Clitoria ternatea is an amazing plant with a rich history of use in many parts of Asia. People believed this to be a true gift of nature as almost all parts of this plant were known to have beneficial effects.

Clitoria ternatea is also one of several herbs that has been associated with the term Shankhpushpi, an Indian Ayurvedic used as a memory enhancer and nootropic. Tests on animals, using an extract of Clitoria ternatea roots, confirmed the roots to possess nootropic activity.

In Southeast Asia, the blue flowers are used as a natural food colouring. It’s added to rice, tea, fruit juice or cocktails. Butterfly pea flowers contain the natural antioxidant blue proanthocyanidin.

Usage Butterfly pea flowers

Add three or four flower plumes to a glass of water, a cocktail drink or juice for a nice blue or purple colour. As a tea (on its own) it tastes slightly like black tea; not unpleasant but not an especially strong taste. Let the tea steep for 10 to 15 minutes.

Effects Clitoria ternatea

The flowers can be added to food to colour them and are considered a natural alternative for food additive 'Patent Blue V' (E131).

What’s interesting is that it doesn’t always produce a blue colour, as one would expect from looking at the beautiful, deep blue flowers. When added to something sour it turns red or purple and when added to a basic solution it turns blue.

This is a very interesting tea, the flavour is faint, but quite pleasant.
It has a beautiful blue colour, that changes to deep purple when you add lemon juice, which also enhances the flavour.
