Product information

Calea dream herb is also known as 'dog grass' or Calea zacatechichi ("bitter grass"). The shrub belongs to the sunflower family and grows naturally in the Mexican highlands and certain parts of Costa Rica. Calea zacatechichi measures 1 - 1.5 m in height. The plant has many branches with oviform and opposite leaves (3-5 cm long and 2-4 cm wide).

It is used by the Chontal people of Mexico to obtain divinatory messages during dreaming and in Mexican folk medicine as an aperitif and to improve the natural metabolism. Chontal people have been naming Calea 'leaf of God'. It is valued for its ability to clear the senses, to induce visions in dreams and as a healing plant in general. Shamans use the herb to receive divine messages in their dreams. Ordinary people in Mexico use it to increase appetite and as a health product that supports a natural digestion, among other things.

Dream herb effects

Calea provides a restful and drowsy effect. The psychoactive effect is subtle and can be described as dreamlike. Some people will notice a clarity of mind. Some consider Calea a hallucinogen, although no hallucinogenic alkaloid has yet been isolated.

Calea usage

3 to 25 grams of the shredded dried leaves are drunk as tea. It tastes very bitter. The powder variety is equally bitter but ideal for use with capsules. We recommend using a capsule machine.

Here's as story of my adventures with Calea (shredded). I tried it mostly during a course of 5 consecutive nights, since it was suggested that the effect would work best that way. I also tried it a couple of times at random individual nights.

Two methods of ingestion that I tried were tea and smoking. The first thing that you'll have to take into consideration if you're interested in experiencing Calea is that the plant makes for probably the most horrible tasting tea on planet Earth :D With smoke the taste is a little less horrid but the smoke is really harsh, so pick your poison. I strongly prefer the tea anyway since it works better. I didn't try it with a vaporizer.

I made the tea by bringing about 1-2 cups worth of water to a boil, adding 2-4 tablespoons of Calea and letting it swim in the hot water for half an hour. I would then consume the tea right before going to sleep.

About the effects, first of all in waking state I found that Calea induces this sedative, relaxed, sleepy state of being. I don't know if it does this during the day too since I had no reason to try it during the day. Anyway, I don't usually remember my dreams. I had a one strong dream experience with Calea, during the second night. I remember having this long dream where I just hung out with a couple of real-life people that I know, doing stuff and having discussions.

The exact details escape me but it felt profound at the time. At that same night, my dreams escalated to this scene where I was running at insane speed through a subway tunnel, slashing incoming subways into *half* with a katana, while being chased by a group of ninjas xD ! Sounds awesome, right? I woke up spontaneously from that dream and here's the interesting part - I looked around and there was this one part of a wall where the normal texture was replaced by a stream of letters and symbols o_O Also everything looked 'different' than normal, I can't explain it. It lasted for while, went away and I fell back asleep.

Some days I would wake up with a minor headache, don't know if it was Calea or just co-incidence.

There is definitely something very interesting about this plant. I'm eager to try some more at a later date, maybe the extract or with different preparation methods. I would recommend at least giving it a try if you're interested in oneirogens.

Thanks Azarius! :)

I take this herb in a capsule, one or two capsules very late before going to sleep, and even better if you take it at around 2-4am at night. So wake up, take the capsules and go back to bed.

Now, this herb mostly gives me very vivid dreams, therefore the chance to realise I am dreaming and have a lucid dream is bigger. However, to attain a lucid dream one has to intend it before going to bed. And if it works after the first try then you are either very lucky or a natural dreamer. It took me around a month to have my first ever lucid dream and it happened through writing down my dreams every morning - first thing upon awakening.

Some nights when I take Calea I do not lucid dream. Sometimes I do. I feel it is the work of spirit whether you do or not. And your unbending intent and strong will can certainly help.

If you really want to enhance your dream recall, then I recommend taking galantamine. It is a natural booster of your memory.
With galantamine, just like with Calea zakatechichi, it is not advisable to take them every night. Actually, they work a lot better if you take them every other night or even rest for a couple of nights. Happy dreaming!.

I smoked until I got sick. No effect.

I drank it as tea with dregs and all until I got sick. No effect.
