Product information

Contains everything you need for growing your own San Pedro cacti:

  • 20 San Pedro seeds (Echinopsis pachanoi)
  • potting soil
  • coarse sand
  • drainage gravel
  • grow container with lid
  • perlite
  • instructions about how to grow your own San Pedro cacti

Usage

Make 10 small holes in the bottom of the container. Fill the container, first with the gravel then with the mixture of soil and sand.

Put the seeds on the earth and press them gently with a pencil slightly into the earth, but not all the way in! They still have to remain visible. Spray into the container until the earth feels well moist and close the lid of the container.

Put the container in a warm place, for instance in an electric blanket or next to a heater.

Humidity

After one to three weeks the seeds will germinate. Until then, make sure the earth is damp. After about eight weeks it is time to make holes in the lid. After another two weeks make some more holes so the small cacti can slowly get used to dry air. Another two weeks after that it is time to open the lid. Keep the earth moist for another 2 months. After these two months you should give them less and less water. Make sure the earth has completely dried out before you water them again.

Lighting

During germination and initial growth of the mini-cacti it is best to use fluorescent tube lighting. Only afterwards (indirect) sunlight can be used.

It's the first time I grow something from seed up.
I followed the steps (sterilization in the oven, put holes in the bottom and didn't put the seeds too far down the earth mix).
I then put them in a room that isn't used at the moment (normal bedroom size) and put the container on a holding plateau (where I give the water to absorb via the containers bottom holes).
I then put it on a box close too the heater (+- 50 cm) and left the curtain a bit open (the window is pointed east). This way there isn't direct sunlight, but enough light for the seeds. I did it this way, because I don't have a TL lamp or other good equipment.

I started the growset on 25 march 2017 and had the first germination on 6 april 2017. Between 7 april 2017 and 9 april 2017 there germinated another 18 of the 20 seeds.

Thus far (11 april 2017) I have 19 germinated seedlings. I'm happy it's so successful till now without the strict illumination. So far so good with this Azarius growkit and I hope I can grow most of this little cacti.

After reading the instructions I was somewhat confused. I have been growing cacti for a long time and decided that sterilising the soil in the microwave and making holes in the bottom of the container would not be necessary. I was right after half a year my cacti are still growing perfectly without following the instruction manual. However I once almost killed them, but im not sure why. The turned dark brown once. I think I gave them too much water and then placed them in sunlight, so that the water drops worked like magnifying glasses and burned them. However all except for one survived and became green again. This must be one of the most robust plants out there :D Only downside to growing them is that they grow really slow at the beginning. Mine havent even reached a centimetre yet after half a year...
